On the Other Side of the World

I guess it is about time that I update this thing.  It's summer and my brain is taking a break with the rest of my body, so I hope this will be coherent.  So far summer has been good but short!  Currently, Josh is leading a team of 15 in South Africa.  They left Thursday, June 26 and will return Monday morning, July 7.  As far as I have heard, they are doing great and truly being used by God.  They are working a camp for kids at an orphanage and on Monday, the first day of camp, they had 260 kids!  Josh said that they are very excited about them being there, but it is also sad because many of the kids have been sexually abused and many of their parents have died of AIDS.  It is so easy to get caught in our little American bubble and forget that there are people all over the world whose lives look more like these children.  It is easy to forget that as Americans, we are an exception.  Did you know that 1 out of 2 people live on less than $2 a day?  That is incredible to think about.  While we are blessed as Americans, I wonder if our material blessings sometimes crowd out the spiritual blessings that God wants to bestow on us.  I, too, went to Africa four summers ago and while the conditions are worse than I could ever describe to you, there was such a strong feeling of joy among the people.  It was a joy that I myself have never experienced.  It was a joy unhindered by material possessions and by busy schedules.  For a people who seem to have no reason to hope, they possessed far more hope than most of the people I know.  If you read this blog, please pray for Josh and the team as they finish up the camp and travel back to the U.S.  I just wanted to share a little bit of what is going on over there.  I will make him post a blog with pictures when he gets back so that he can tell you more.
